Helmet Buying Options in Vietnam - Brands Reviewed

What is your budget and what brand should you buy

Looking deep into your wallet and figuring out how much your brain is worth is one of the easiest ways to narrow down helmet selection.

As a generalisation, brands tend to concentrate in certain price brackets. These brackets relate to quality and safety.

Once you understand which brands are targeting which pricing, and the pros and cons between the $20 Vietnamese Helmet and the $800 Shoei helmet, it puts you in a good position to move beyond window shopping and to finally put your money where your brain is.

Here is our brand breakdown, starting with the cheapest

The Hello Kittie baseball cap helmet

Purchased for around $2 on the side of any Vietnamese road. These “hello kitty” helmets are nothing more than a thin plastic baseball cap helmet.

Wearing one of these helmets put you firmly at the bottom of the natural selection food chain. If a pink cat graphic is worth more than your head, then go for it.

Napoli

Napoli are the cheapest brand of Vietnam’s big three helmet companies (Napoli, GRS and Andes).

All the above mentioned brands have helmets from around $15 up to $40. For the money they are outstanding quality and for many people this is enough helmet for pottering around the streets of Vietnam.

They should not be considered high quality however and they are not passing any safety ratings.

At Chrunix, we feel Napoli is the best value for money cheap helmet in the country.

GRS

A very popular Vietnamese brand that appears to producing the highest quality helmets against its competitors of Andes and Napoli. The pricing is slightly higher (a few dollars) but they do have a better finished product.

Not passing any safety ratings, but for the money it is a great brand.

GRS

Andes

The most common and popular helmet brand in Vietnam. For the money they are a great helmet, but not passing any safety certifications.

Bulldog

Going up the ladder a little bit from the locally supported helmets, Bulldog helmets start at around $30. With Bulldog you are paying for image not quality. Although fine helmets for the money, in terms of quality they appear to be no different from the cheaper Brands of Napoli, Andes and GRS.

They are stylish though, and at Chrunix they are one of our best selling brands.

Givi

Starting at around $40, Givi is taking the locally made helmets and adding a high quality finish to them. Upgrading the leather, stiching and just the general feel of the helmet. For someone wanting a great city helmet that is going to last a long time, feel quality and keep them relatively safe then going for Givi is a good choice.

Yohe

Starting at around $50, Yohe are the cheapest “real helmet” in Vietnam and probably the world. For the money they are an amazing helmet and come at around $20 cheaper than the nearest competition of LS2.

However, Yohe finish appears to be lacking and looking closely at the helmet you can see corner cutting.

They fall short on the quality level needed for international distribution and they remain firmly to be a very budget “real” looking helmet.

Yohe helmets claim a DOT safety rating.
